Driving a car and riding a motorcycle require different skills and knowledge. Although motorcycle-licensing regulations vary, all states require a motorcycle license endorsement to supplement your automobile driver's license. To receive the proper endorsement in most states, you'll need to pass written and on-cycle skills tests administered by your state's licensing agency. Some states require you to take a state-sponsored rider education course. Others waive the on-cycle skills test if you've already taken and passed a state-approved course. Either way, completing a motorcycle rider education course is a good way to ensure you have the correct instruction and experience it takes to ride a motorcycle. Contact your state motor vehicle administration to find a motorcycle rider-training course near you.

Given the fact that motorcycles vary in handling and responsiveness, be sure to take the time to get accustomed to the feel of a new or unfamiliar motorcycle by riding it in a controlled area. Once you feel comfortable with your bike, you can take it into traffic. Make sure you know how to handle your motorcycle in a variety of conditions (e.g., inclement weather or encountering hazards such as slick roads, potholes, and road debris).

Experienced riders know local traffic laws - and they don't take risks. Obey traffic lights, signs, speed limits, and lane markings; ride with the flow of traffic and leave plenty of room between your bike and other vehicles; and always check behind you and signal before you change lanes. Remember to ride defensively. The majority of multi-vehicle motorcycle crashes generally are caused when other drivers simply didn't see the motorcyclist. Proceed cautiously at intersections and yield to pedestrians and other vehicles as appropriate. You can increase your visibility by applying reflective materials to your motorcycle and by keeping your motorcycle's headlights on at all times, even using high beams during the day.

Motorcyclists continue to be overrepresented in traffic-related fatalities. Per vehicle miles traveled in 2021, motorcyclists are about 24 times more likely than people in passenger cars to die in a traffic crash. For these reasons, NHTSA is dedicated to promoting safe behaviors of motorcyclists and other motorists, as spelled out in our Motorcycle Safety 5-Year Plan and demonstrated by our public awareness campaigns like Share the Road and Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over.

A Virginia man has been refunded the $600 he was charged for an Uber ride after he became trapped in a miles-long traffic jam in Virginia that had some drivers stuck on the interstate for more than a day.

According to Uber's website, factors such as heavy traffic or bad weather may cause a passenger's trip to take longer than expected. To compensate a driver for the additional time caused, the company says the passenger's fare may increase.

Drivers were trapped in traffic for hours on the I-95 following the icy conditions and snow-covered roadways on Monday. The National Weather Service reported up to 11 inches of snow fell in the area during Monday's winter storm.

Footage from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation captured the rider pushing the scooter on the interstate shoulder, exiting near Drexel Avenue, then immediately re-entering alongside the four lanes of traffic to continue on the scooter's power toward Chicago

The Transportation Improvement Association (TIA) announced a new distracted driving enforcement initiative on April 25, 2017. Operation Ghost Rider uses unmarked spotter vehicles, which contain a law enforcement passenger. When the spotters observe a distracted driver, they radio a fully marked law enforcement unit to initiate a traffic stop.

Of the 33 fatalities, 22 of the riders were not properly licensed. Preliminary toxicology results reveal that 18 of the riders tested positive for alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both. Single-vehicle crashes contributed to 9 of 33 fatalities. Speed was a factor in 19 of these deaths. Only 9 of 33 riders were wearing helmets at the time of their incident.

Motorists should allow for more following distance when traveling behind a motorcycle, so the rider has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. Riders may need to suddenly change speed or adjust position within a lane due to road and traffic conditions such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces

In Thailand, red light running is considered as one of the most dangerous behaviors at intersection. Red light running (RLR) behavior is the failure to obey the traffic control signal. However, motorcycle riders and car drivers who are running through red lights could be influenced by human factors or road environment at intersection. RLR could be advertent or inadvertent behavior influenced by many factors. Little research study has been done to evaluate the contributing factors influencing the red-light violation behavior. This study aims to determine the factors influencing the red light running behavior including human characteristics, physical condition of intersection, traffic signal operation, and traffic condition. A total of 92 intersections were observed in Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Chonburi, the major provinces in each region of Thailand. In addition, the socio-economic characteristics of red light runners were obtained from self-reported questionnaire survey. The Binary Logistic Regression and the Multiple Linear Regression models were used to determine the characteristics of red light runners and the factors influencing rates of red light running respectively. The results from this study can help to understand the characteristics of red light runners and factors affecting them to run red lights. For motorcycle riders and car drivers, age, gender, occupation, driving license, helmet/seatbelt use, and the probability to be penalized when running the red light significantly affect RLR behavior. In addition, the results indicated that vehicle travelling direction, time of day, existence of turning lane, number of lanes, lane width, intersection sight distance, type of traffic signal pole, type of traffic signal operation, length of yellow time interval, approaching speed, distance from intersection warning sign to stop line, and pavement roughness significantly affect RLR rates.

Although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.6% of all vehicle miles traveled in the United States, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities, 17% of all occupant fatalities, and 3% of all occupant injuries in 2021. A factor that directly influences motorcycle fatality trends is helmet use. (Explore helmet use trends)

Fatalities among motorcycle riders and passengers increased 8% from 2020 to 2021, while the rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled decreased by 2%. Over the last 10 years, deaths have increased 19%, while death rates have increased 29%. The number of motorcycle fatalities now stands at 5,932 and the rate is 30.05 per 100 million vehicle miles.

The car rider traffic pattern is changing. Starting Wednesday, October 21st all car riders will be dropped off and picked up in the front circle of the school. This change is due to construction in the back of the school to fix some drainage issues. Drop off will begin at 7:30 as usual but you will not be allowed to park and wait until 7:30 as we cannot have traffic backing up in the street. Please plan to arrive no earlier than 7:30. Dismissal in the afternoon will also begin promptly at 1:45. You will not be allowed to park and wait as we cannot impede the flow of traffic. Please arrive no earlier than 1:45.

All cars must enter the circle from Robert Street by turning right into the front circle. No left turns to enter the circle will be allowed. All cars must exit the circle onto Robert Street by turning right. No left turns will be allowed as you exit the circle. The Marion Police Department will be on campus to direct traffic.

Traffic Rider is a fast paced racing game that has you speeding down perilous, traffic filled highways, on a motorcycle, trying to complete specific objectives. As you complete each race, you earn gold and in game currency that you can use towards upgrading and unlocking motorbikes.

Local agencies operate and own approximately 75% of all public roadways. Nearly 80% of these roads are classified as rural. Even though these roads only carry 40% of the traffic, nearly 60% of all crash fatalities occur on local roads. As such, there is a need to focus safety related information and training to support the local agencies responsible for roadway safety.
